Pentagon Combatives Association is a result of the hard work, dedication, and vision of PapaJohn Gorman (a retired Army officer and political consultant that found Jiu-Jitsu later in life and went on to win championships around the world). As part of his philosophy to give back to the military and Jiu-Jitsu communities PapaJohn formed Pentagon Combatives Association (PCA) in 2005. While originally envisioned as an organization to support the military, PCA quickly expanded to military civilians and dependents, and then to other government agencies, civilians, and personnel from foreign governments that wanted to learn Jiu-Jitsu. Since its inception the association has supported military and civilian members, hosted the 2007 and 2008 Military Championships at Fort Belvior, trained multiple local, state, and federal personnel, supported the formation of USA Jiu-Jitsu (USAJJ) and the US Military Jiu-Jitsu Association (USMJJA), and continued to maintain a not-for-profit mindset geared towards furthering Jiu-Jitsu inside and outside the military. From a sporting aspect the association is home to medallists ranging from local to international tournaments. From a self-defense standpoint the association uses the Midori Yama Budokai (MYB) Jiu-Jitsu program to reinforce all aspects of real-world applications pertaining to stand-up, takedowns, and grappling with and without uniforms and weapons. Just as the sporting side of Jiu-Jitsu is supported by elite competitors, the association has a deep reservoir of combat veterans dating back to Vietnam.
As a part of its mandate the association continues to support members that have departed and to add and recognize the many students of Jiu-Jitsu in the service of the United States of America that have not been able to advance in a single club during their time in the military. To facilitate on-site, satellite, and distance programs PCA follows the USMJJA Jiu-Jitsu curriculum and videos. This feature allows service members and civilians to continue their training even during deployments or travels of short and permanent duration.
